Merrill to Honor Longest-Serving Mayor Ralph “Fata” Voigt Saturday

A piece of Merrill’s history will be recognized Saturday when an honorary street sign is unveiled in honor of former Mayor Ralph “Fata” Voigt.

Voigt, born in Merrill in 1917, served as mayor from 1960 through 1978 after winning election to the Common Council in 1951. He returned to the position in 1979 to finish the unexpired term of Mayor Patrick Nugent. Before entering city government, Voigt graduated from Merrill Senior High School and the University of Wisconsin–Madison. During World War II, he served in France and Germany with a military government unit after receiving a commission as a first lieutenant. He was discharged in 1946.

After returning home, Voigt established the Fata Voigt Insurance Agency while continuing his involvement in public service. In addition to his work as mayor, he served on numerous state boards and committees and founded the Merrill on the Move Committee to promote the city. The Merrill Chamber of Commerce also recognized his efforts on Merrill’s behalf. Voigt had previously been selected for an honorary street sign, but scheduling conflicts delayed the dedication until 2026.

The public is invited to gather at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 24, at the intersection of Grand Avenue and North Genesee Street for the unveiling.
